Water Kefir Ginger Ale

As promised here is one of my new favorite water kefir recipes! If you go back in time to about 10 years ago I was drinking soda every single day. My favorites were Coca-Cola and Canada Dry ginger ale. They are just so refreshing, BUT they also are terrible for your body. After I had my first daughter I decided to eliminate soda from my diet. On occasion I would still have a soda, like if we had a get together or something but I really tried not to have soda regularly.

Nowadays, I never drink soda and I don’t even crave it anymore. I do crave a carbonated beverage sometimes and as much as I like La Croix and all the other flavored sparkling waters out there, I don’t keep them on hand.

That is where this water kefir ginger ale comes in and hits the spot! It’s also great when your stomach is upset. It’s got all those probiotics in there and the ginger is really soothing.

You start off with a batch of fermented water kefir. Strain it off the grains into a large container and set aside. I usually just use a pitcher so it’s easy to transfer to bottles or mason jars. At this point I usually start another batch of water kefir and then get going on making the ginger ale.

In a blender combine the ginger root, lemon juice, and water and pulse until the ginger root is all grated up.

Strain the ginger water through a fine mesh strainer or cheese cloth to remove the chunks of ginger. I just do this over the container that already has the water kefir in it. Add in the sugar and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Pour the water kefir into bottles or a mason jar and cover tightly with a lid. We make hard cider so I have a bunch of bottles and lids but a mason jar with a lid and ring works great as well. You need something that seals so it can build up pressure and make the ginger ale carbonated. That being said… Don’t forget about it and let it go for a few days or anything because the bottles or jar can explode from all the pressure. I’ve let mine go a couple days if the weather has been on the cool side but I wouldn’t want to test going another day because at two days it is super carbonated! Just be careful!

There you have it, a healthy alternative to soda that tastes great! Let me know what flavor combinations you make with your water kefir in the comments down below!
