You probably all know by now that I don’t really like sugar. I mean I like the taste of it but I don’t like what it does for my health. I am always trying to figure out ways to replace refined sugars in our house. One item that I have kept buying in this journey is chocolate syrup. I don’t use it much but my husband often wants a glass of chocolate milk after work and Scarlett likes to join in. So I went looking through some of my old pins on Pinterest and found a recipe for a homemade chocolate syrup and it got me thinking of ways to make it without regular white sugar.
I went ahead and made this chocolate syrup with coconut sugar and stevia as the sweeteners and it turned out great. It tastes like hot fudge sauce but it has the consistency of the typical chocolate syrup you buy in the bottle.
Now I’m not saying this stuff is healthy. It still has a lot of sugar in it but I feel a whole lot better giving this to my family than the stuff you buy from the store. It’s great for making chocolate milk and over ice cream. I’m going to try it in some iced coffee next and I’ll update you on that!
This recipe is super quick and easy. You start out with water, coconut sugar, salt, and stevia in a medium saucepan. Heat until it comes to a boil, let it boil for 1 minute then remove from heat.
Let the sugar syrup cool for 15 minutes and then whisk in your cocoa powder and vanilla extract.
Pour into a mason jar and store in the fridge. Maybe try making some chocolate milk with it first. 🙂
