There’s nothing like a plate of classic spaghetti. I forget about this simple, yet delicious meal. Everyone in the family loves it, it’s pretty cheap, and super easy to put together. It honestly should be a weekly meal around here.
I also love how it makes the house smell when it’s all cold outside. It just smells so cozy!
This recipe it a very basic recipe that you could totally jazz up with whatever your family prefers. Sometimes I add sliced olives, mushrooms, green bell peppers… Just whatever I’ve got on hand. Any way you make it though tastes amazing!
The day I made it for this blog post I made a double batch for some lasagna I will be making in the next week. This sauce freezes fantastically! Great as a pizza sauce as well.
To get started you’ll want to brown up your ground beef with the onions and garlic. I also like to add in a little salt and pepper.
Brown the meat until cooked through and then drain off the fat.
After you have the meat browned and the fat drained off, add in all of the remaining ingredients except the butter.
I did all of this in my instant pot but you can also use a regular pot on the stove top or a crock pot. More detailed instructions down below on those options. At this point I covered the instant pot with the lid set to venting and turned on the slow cooker function on high. I let it simmer for about 4 hours. After the sauce is cooked to your liking add in the butter and stir until completely incorporated.
Then it’s time to serve it up!
For the pictures I served this sauce over regular angel hair pasta but I also cooked up a spaghetti squash and it was so tasty!

Spaghetti Sauce
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 small/medium onion diced finely
- 4 cloves of minced garlic
- 28 oz can crushed tomatoes
- 28 oz can petite diced tomatoes
- 8 oz can tomato sauce
- 6 oz can tomato paste
- 2 tsp dried oregano
- 2 tsp dried basil
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1/4-1/2 tsp cayenne powder
- 2 Tbsp brown sugar
- 2 Tbsp butter
- salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
-
In a large pot over medium-high heat or brown the ground beef along with the onions and garlic. If you are using an instant pot you can use the saute function on high to brown the meat.
-
Once the meat is browned, drain off all of the fat. At this point return the instant pot back into the base, place browned meat in a crock pot from the pot you browned in, or just keep it in the large pot to cook on the stove.
-
Add in all of the remaining ingredients except the butter to the pot. Stir and then cover. If you are cooking on the stove turn it to low and stir frequently to make sure it doesn't burn. Simmer for about 2 hours. If you are using the instant pot turn the heat setting to high on the slow cooker setting, cover with the vent open and let simmer 4 hours stirring halfway through. If you are using a crock pot turn the heat setting to high and simmer 4-6 hours depending on how hot your crock pot cooks.
-
Add in the butter and stir until melted. Serve the sauce over pasta or spaghetti squash and enjoy!
