I just couldn’t wait to get back to our weekly homeschool review. Vacation was great and I wouldn’t have wanted to go without it but I have been so excited to get back to school. I feel like the kids are in better moods which means I am in a better mood which makes it a great day! 😀
This term I switched up our schedule a little bit to go with my daycare schedule but really you can move things around to do what works best for you and your family. I’m trying to make nature study a priority this term too. We started out strong with nature study last term but then we slowly drifted away from it because I hate being cold and didn’t want to venture outside. This term we are bundling up and getting outside every day. Unless it is pouring rain… The kids are so much happier when we get outside and get fresh air!
Another change is our history/geography. It’s mostly geography I suppose, but anyways I found this book and it has been awesome. It has 5 assignments per week so I am doing one each day with Scarlett but they are very short so you could definitely double up on it if you needed to.
Other than those changes we are sticking to the same kind of days around here. Here is a link to my post with our lesson plan and supply list if you haven’t downloaded those already. They are completely free.
Our theme for the week was space.
I started out the week with playing Vivaldi through Spotify. We have enjoyed listening to all of the classical composers and so we are continuing it. I’m looking forward to actually learning about the composers themselves more in the next couple of school years but for now we are just listening to it throughout our days.
For nature study we learned about hibernation in our nature workbook and I was able to find a video on Youtube for kids on hibernation that we watched together. Then, as I mentioned earlier, we went outside every day. Even if it was cold and we were only able to play for 20 minutes I made it a priority to get outside at least once a day. The girls love this mud puddle. Every time it rains they go hopping through it.
For history/geography we started our new workbook. I really wish I would have started this at the beginning of the school year because it’s just a really neat book. Scarlett really enjoys it and always asks if we can work on it first.
For science we learned why there are craters on the moon and we did this fun activity to go with it. Both of the girls enjoyed dropping the little rocks and then after we were done with the actual activity they just wanted to play with the stuff!
For art we made a puffy paint moon. I used this tutorial and I must have used products that were a little different or something because I followed the instructions to make puffy paint and I ended up with slime. Honestly, it was great because the girls love to play with slime and now I know how to make it without borax or contact solution. I used rose art brand glue and shaving cream from Dollar Tree. So after we ended up with the slime I just mixed a little paint and shaving cream together and we did the project without the glue. The only downside is that shaving cream doesn’t dry really so we had to toss the art later that day but because we ended up with slime we were all okay with that. 🙂
For reading we learned the sight words Be, Have, and Am. Then we read If you Decide to go to the Moon and Eeyore has a Birthday and I had Scarlett summarize them after we were finished. Something I have been doing in our free time is read Scarlett chapter books. We recently finished Matilda and now we are reading Charlotte’s Web.
For handwriting we are writing our sight words. I just have Scarlett write one of her sight words each day.
Finally, for math we did a worksheet from our Mickey Mouse numbers and counting workbook I found at Dollar Tree. I’m having her do 2 pages of it each week. I also found another workbook called morning starters. It has a little of everything and I’m just having her do a page each week. It’s just a simple workbook but Scarlett seems to like it so I’m going with it. We did this counting the sun rays activity and the puddle jump math game as well.
First week back was a great success and I’m sure the coming weeks will be just as great. Comment down below if you have any questions. Have a great week!
