We had so much fun during week 3! Our theme was apples which we were able to incorporate in more than one subject this week. We finished out our week on Saturday pressing apples to make apple cider. It was what I was hoping would happen when I put together the school schedule but I wasn’t quite sure if it would line up or not. It did and we canned 151 quarts of delicious apple cider!
Anyways, we started out the week with our nature study. One of the assignments was going on a night walk. That would have been a lot of fun but the speed limit on our street is 55 MPH so I didn’t really feel comfortable taking a walk in the dark so we just sat outside in the backyard and listened and watched. It was great because we usually don’t get to explore much once it is dark so it was something different.
Next up was art and we did this fun apple sponge paint craft. I was supposed to have paper plates for this and I completely missed them at the store so I ended up having Scarlett cut a circle out of white card stock instead.
For math this week we did our math worksheet for week 3, this apple fingerprint math activity, and the race to fill the cup game with these animal counters. Scarlett is really showing improvement on her numbers.
Reading this week we added 3 new sight words it, in, and said. We also read The Tale of Squirrel Nutkin from this book and we read at least one Curious George book from this set and I had Scarlett give me a summary of what happened in the stories. Reading is definitely one of Scarlett’s favorite subjects.
Handwriting we worked on practicing the letter D, E, and F. Handwriting is not her favorite but she does get excited when I tell her that she will be able to write words once she gets good at writing all of the letters.
For science we did this awesome apple volcano experiment. This was such a neat project and I was able to explain to her the chemical reaction between the baking soda and vinegar. The only thing I would suggest is that you don’t hollow out the apple all the way through the bottom because the reaction will go out the bottom of the apple. Thankfully Scarlett put in a ton of baking soda to begin with so the first bit came out the top but then as she added more vinegar it started flowing from the bottom.
Of course little sister had to come check out the action as well!
History this week was pretty neat. I found this book about Oregon and so we are just going to read a few pages at a time to learn more about our state.
