The school year is in full swing! Oh man I have been so excited to get started with homeschooling with our oldest daughter. Like most 4-year-olds, she is curious about everything and I love seeing her face light up when she learns something new.
I wanted to do a recap of our first week and share how everything went. So far the routine is going well and I’m just so excited to share everything!
So as I’ve mentioned before, I run a daycare from my home Monday and Tuesdays. We go a bit lighter on schoolwork those days and mostly learn through play and exploring the outdoors. The rest of the week is when we do more of the traditional schoolwork and I am able to have one on one time with Scarlett.
Every day we start the day out with prayer, a devotional, and a bible story while the kids have their breakfast. It seems like a great way to start our day instead of trying to do it sometime in the middle of the day. Also, I’ve been playing the composer we are studying on Spotify throughout the day.
Monday we started out the week with our nature study. I ordered this book to help us have a guide on where to start our nature study. The book is definitely meant for older children but I just read the section beforehand and then I guide Scarlett through the “assignment” while we play outside.
Does anyone else feel like the day could be falling all to pieces but then you go outside and the kid’s moods do a complete 180? This mommy loves to play outside! 😀
Tuesday is arts and crafts and this week we did a cute hand and footprint craft. Our theme for week 1 is All About Me and this seemed to fit in with that. The printable is from naturalbeachliving.com and you can download it for free once you sign up for the newsletter.
Wednesday we did math, handwriting, reading, and science. It seems like a lot but it was just right for Scarlett’s attention span. We started out with math. You can download the free printables here.
Next up was handwriting. We worked on learning to write her first name. I was able to find this handwriting tablet at The Dollar Tree!
Next we did reading. We read a lot of books throughout every day but I’ve planned out specific books for school. We went over sight words and I made this little doodad to add all of the sight words throughout the year. BTW the Dollar Tree has a great hole punch for a buck. Can you tell I did a lot of school supply shopping at the Dollar Tree?
Next up was science and we did a sense of taste experiment.
We went over what parts of the tongue taste different flavors. It was tons of fun and by the end she learned that mixing the bitter cocoa powder and the sweet coconut sugar together makes a yummy chocolate flavor.
Thursday was a lot of the same subjects as Wednesday. We did math first and we did a math activity.
This was a great activity to get Scarlett more familiar with numbers. She is great at counting but we are working on recognizing the numbers when she sees them.
We worked on writing her first name again for handwriting and we read Beatrix Potter for reading. For geography we looked at a map and I showed her where we live and where different family members and friends live. Again, I found these great supplies at the Dollar Tree.
Finally, came Friday. We started out with a math game. I found these animal counters on Amazon and they were perfect for this activity and a great price.
Scarlett loved this game. We played a few times for school but she played it several more times throughout the weekend just for fun.
We finished out the week with continuing to practice writing her first name for handwriting and we read The Little House for reading.
I’d say our first week was great and I’m looking forward to sharing each week throughout our homeschool journey with you all!
